The non-volley zone debate that never dies

What is the first question you find yourself asking after a pickleball session?

I’m curious what everyone thinks about right after playing a session. I find myself sometimes playing games back in my head but get frustrated how imprecise that is. Assume any of the below questions would be answered correctly and would break out overall play as well as various facets (eg, kitchen, 3rd shots, forehand drives, etc) [View Poll](https://www.reddit.com/poll/1sbgar0)

I need to fix my Counters (9 video clips)

I posted yesterday about this in this sub, but I was able to order the footage and post clips in this thread. I really need to fix my counters against speed ups from transition and kitchen. Below are 9 clips of similar situations where I went to a forehand and had to go backhand late. I'm aware of sliding and sometimes subconsciously do it, but wondering if part of the solution is to just sit more backhand and expect the backhand to save me. But then I wonder if they'll start attacking my fore...

Small helpful lob tip

I realized that I do this the other day at an open play and how helpful it is for practicing lobs. Whenever the rally ends, if the ball is near me and the opponents are serving the next point, I lob the ball to them and try to be intentional about making it a game-like lob. I’m usually near my kitchen line, they’re at or near the baseline, and a practice lob will bounce at the baseline and bounces up to a height that they can just catch the ball. And I’m sure most people prefer that than roll...

Particular Out-ball pattern giving me NIGHTMARES

Scenario: Only happens when I'm at the kitchen line when I'm on the odd/left side. One particular player only (a 4.0 coach), at least 3 times per game, EVERY game, hits me with a high speed cross-body speed up to my high/left shoulder/face area, from I think below the net and off the bounce. I miss-hit it every time trying to counter it, to where it just goes out of bounds to the left of me or possibly in the net. I think he executes this shot usually in transition, anywhere from 2-7 ft from the...

AITA Tournament Edition

Would love some feedbacks from a situation from a 4.0 tournament I played in this weekend. Very competitive game, no iffy line calls or anything ill spirited and the other team is seeing for the match 10-7-2 The guy is serving to my partner so I’m at the kitchen line and I’m watching him serve. Tips for playing against bangers

Recently played in a 3.5 tournament and we were doing great, the last team we played against (that went on to win) were driving almost every ball. I tried to get out of the way as much as possible to let them go out, but I could not handle it all and was not able to reset due to the power behind all their hits, they'd either pop up or I'd just get bagged. What can I work on to handle this on the future? I will add that hands battles in the kitchen are a weak spot for me in general so tips for im...

Am I the only one who hates the kitchen?

I am new to pickleball. Played badminton casually for two years a few years ago. I find pickleball fun, but I really really hate the kitchen. I don’t feel confident being at the kitchen. I like being in the back or baseline. I feel like I can run up to the net faster than I can backup. I actually have better game when I do it this way. I also hate getting told by others to get up to the kitchen (I know it is part of the game). This is also why I love playing singles, but there is no singles open...

Hitting wider shots at the kitchen

I've noticed one of the differences between 4.0-5.0 rec players versus the pros is the pros really open up the kitchen laterally wheras lower players often use just the middle 3/5ths of the court so to speak. The pros can do this while preventing the ATP also. But I think even at sub 5.0 level we should really be trying for this even if we give up an ATP here and there. Any thoughts or tips on getting those dinks to land wider?

Please look at feet and star calling kitchen violations.

I think one of the worst things to deal with is with people that constant cheat (knowingly or unknowingly ) and it gets worse once you get to a decent level (4.0+)… For background, in my league we have a couple of older teams (+50) that love to get 1/4 to half foot inside the kitchen when dealing with a tight drop or when smacking an overhead, well, me and other teams have decided to start “aggressively” calling them out, and yes, it’s not pretty, it doesn’t even feel right at times but it’s so...

If a pair of 4.0s could ignore the NVZ rule, could they beat a pair of 5.0s in doubles?

I was giving some informal coaching to my newbie friends today, and one guy just ran up to the net and smashed the ball hard, winning the point. Now obviously he forgot about the NVZ rule, but I was thinking that being able to run into the kitchen and smash is a huge advantage. So do you guys think a pair of 4.0s being allowed to ignore the NVZ rule could beat a pair of 5.0s?

Should older players stand further from the kitchen line in order to have more time to react?

I'm curious about this for my parents who play with me sometimes. One of them said that they intentionally stand farther back because they don't feel like they can react quickly. Personally, I think they can hold their own in hands battles even in their 60s, as long as the point doesn't go on super long or isn't overwhelming fast/powerful. So from my view I feel they are giving up their advantage by defaulting to another step or two back. So I'm wondering if there's any truth to this, or if the...

Stepped in kitchen after volley, was it allowed?

I'm a 4.0 player and understand the momentum rule, but playing with a group the other day I hit a game winner overhead while moving forward from the center of the court. After hitting it I walked forward and crossed the kitchen line to hit paddles with my opponents. They claimed they got the point because I never stopped moving forward. Unintentional double hit dink happened last night.

First time I’ve seen this particular double hit, however, after thinking about it briefly it was legit according to current rules. What happened? Opponent hit a high lobby reset shot that barely passed over the net by inches into the kitchen. This required a charge to the net to attack the ball off the bounce just at or above the net. Since the bounce was so close to the net I chose to dink the ball over with an almost flat paddle no swing or angle. It double hit the paddle by bouncing and dripp...

I’m counting on you more experienced players to help me out. When I’m receiving a serve, and hoping to thwart the opponent’s third shot drop, is there a better choice of whom to return my ball to? I’m thinking it’s the server, because my partner is already at the net to shrink the drop’s area to land in.
