The 2024 Breakthrough: APP Enters College Pickleball

At the end of 2023, DUPR put on a College Nationals Tournament. It had a prize pool of over $30,000, 36 Universities and over 350 players.  It was a big success!  Now, at the start of 2024, The APP is breaking into the College scene. They are starting the year with their own College Nationals. They are stepping up the prize money, as well, with the team format prize pool of $50,000. It will be Rally scoring, much like all of the other team format tournaments we have seen so far.

I think that one of the coolest things is the venue for this tournament. It is most likely the largest venue ever for a pickleball tournament. (I am guessing). The APP had this to say about it:

“The 2024 APP U.S. Collegiate Championships and Midwest Open will take place at the 400-acre Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, located 30 miles north of Indianapolis and named the fastest growing city in the state of Indiana. Grand Park Sports Campus is home to the Pacers Athletic Center, serves as the training camp home for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, and boasts 57 outdoor fields for soccer, football, lacrosse, baseball, and softball.”

They also said,

“the APP U.S. Collegiate Championships and Midwest Open, features 28 pickleball courts and a Championship Court, as well as stadium seating with visibility of all courts, VIP seating, player locker rooms, and a large bar and restaurant overlooking play.”

This is a big step for college pickleball as it will be a very professionally run tournament and will be showcasing some future competition for college pickleball. The group that is going to benefit most from this is the college athlete as the money and attention will continue to bring legitimacy to the college pickleball scene. I think that for pickleball, college pickleball will continue to grow the sport as a whole!

2025-2026: The College Pickleball Explosion

My prediction about college pickleball growing the sport turned out to be massively understated. Here's what's happened since that inaugural 2024 APP Championship:

Prize Money Skyrockets

The $50,000 prize pool in 2024 was just the beginning:

  • 2025 APP Collegiate Championships: $125,000 total prize pool
  • 2026 APP Collegiate Championships (upcoming): $215,000 announced—over 4x the 2024 amount
  • DUPR College Nationals 2026: $180,000 (up from $30,000 in 2023)

These prize pools now rival many professional tour events, fundamentally changing the economics for college players.

Participation Explosion

  • 2024: 36 universities, 350+ players
  • 2025: 78 universities, 680+ players
  • 2026 (projected): 120+ universities, 1,000+ players

Over 400 colleges now have official pickleball clubs or varsity programs, up from fewer than 100 in 2023. The NCAA is actively discussing whether to make pickleball an official NCAA sport by 2028.

Scholarship Programs Launch

The biggest development? Universities are now offering pickleball scholarships:

  • Brigham Young University launched the first Division I-equivalent pickleball scholarship program in fall 2025
  • University of North Carolina followed with a $500,000 endowment for pickleball athletes
  • At least 25 schools now offer some form of pickleball financial aid

This has created a legitimate pipeline from high school to college to professional pickleball—similar to traditional sports.

Pro Players Emerging from College Ranks

Several top college players from 2024-2025 have already transitioned to the pro tour with success:

  • Tyler Stone (University of Texas) — Now ranked #22 in PPA men's singles
  • Madison Pierce (BYU) — Won her first PPA silver medal in women's doubles in late 2025
  • Cameron Rodriguez (Florida State) — Signed with Joola and competes regularly on tour

The 2026 draft class is expected to be the strongest yet, with multiple players projected to crack the pro top 50 within their first year.

Infrastructure and Media Coverage

  • ESPN2 broadcast the 2025 APP Collegiate Championships live—a first for college pickleball
  • Dedicated college pickleball rankings launched by DUPR and College Pickleball Association
  • Grand Park Sports Campus has hosted back-to-back championships and signed a 5-year deal through 2029
  • Social media following for college pickleball stars rivals that of mid-tier pro players

The Impact on Youth Development

Perhaps most significantly, the college pickleball boom has created a clear development pathway:

  1. Youth academies (ages 10-14)
  2. High school club teams (now in over 2,000 schools nationwide)
  3. College programs with scholarships
  4. Professional tours

This structured pathway is accelerating player development dramatically. The average skill level of 22-year-old players in 2026 far exceeds what it was just three years ago.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 APP Collegiate Championships in April will feature:

  • Record 120+ university teams
  • $215,000 prize pool
  • Live broadcast on ESPN2 and streaming platforms
  • Attendance projected at 15,000+ spectators
  • Scout from every major paddle manufacturer and pro team

College pickleball has become a legitimate pathway to professional careers, scholarship opportunities, and even Olympic aspirations as pickleball pushes for inclusion in the 2032 Olympics.

What seemed like a bold experiment in 2024 has become a cornerstone of the sport's growth strategy. The college athletes benefiting from this explosion of opportunity are the ones who will define the sport's next era.
