The Gamma Obsidian 16 is Gamma's first Raw Carbon Fiber paddle line and a genuine all-court control paddle at a competitive price point. At 7.8 oz nominal weight (our test unit came in at 7.51 oz out of the box), it's one of the lighter raw carbon options in the market — and lighter paddles invite customization. Spin rates averaged 1,800–1,900 RPM in testing. Drops, dinks, and resets were seamless. Baseline power was solid. Where it falls short: pop at the kitchen line during compact volleys and hand battles. That's the 16mm tradeoff, and Gamma offers a 13mm version for players who need more NVZ aggression.
| Spec | Details |
|---|---|
| Weight | 7.8 oz (nominal); 7.51 oz actual (test unit) |
| Face Material | Raw Carbon Fiber |
| Core | Sensa Core Honeycomb |
| Build Type | Thermoformed |
| Shape | Elongated with Tapered Edge |
| Length | 16.375 in |
| Width | 7.375 in |
| Grip Size | 4.125 in |
| Handle Length | 5.75 in |
| Best For | Beginner to intermediate control players; soft-game focused doubles |
| Main Tradeoff | Limited pop at the NVZ; too soft for most advanced players |

First Look: What the Tapered Profile Actually Does
The Obsidian 16's most distinctive visual feature is its tapered profile — the paddle is wider at the top and narrows toward the base. This isn't cosmetic. A tapered paddle shifts the mass distribution upward, which:
- Raises the sweet spot on the paddle face — higher up than on a standard rectangular profile
- Increases swing speed — less mass at the throat means faster arm rotation
- Enlarges the effective sweet spot — the wider upper face provides more usable contact area
The 5.75" handle is notably long for an elongated paddle — ideal for two-handed backhand players and competitive with the longest handles in the category. The hexagonal grip shape, similar to a tennis racket handle, is one of the best stock grips available. It provides secure purchase without adding bulk.
Stock weight of 7.51 oz is below the nominal 7.8 oz spec. That's a benefit, not a defect: it means you can add lead or tungsten tape to customize the swing weight to your preference without starting heavy. You can always add weight; you can't remove it.
Is a Gamma Obsidian 16 Paddle Good for Spin?
Yes — with a caveat about surface texture.
Spin rates of 1,800–1,900 RPM place the Obsidian 16 in the "high spin" category for production paddles. Some reviewers noted the surface texture felt less rough than other raw carbon paddles, attributing this to a tighter carbon weave rather than reduced grit. The tighter weave does produce a smoother surface feel, but the contact physics still produce strong spin generation.
A common misconception: rougher = more spin. What actually matters is the carbon-to-ball friction coefficient during contact. A tighter weave can produce similar friction to a looser weave — the Obsidian's spin numbers support this. At 1,800–1,900 RPM, it's competitive with more aggressively textured paddles at similar price points.

Power vs. Pop: The Most Important Distinction for Buying This Paddle
Before buying any paddle, understanding the power vs. pop distinction saves frustration:
Power = the velocity the ball maintains as it travels through the air for a sustained duration. Measured on long-distance shots: serves, ground strokes, drives from the baseline.
Pop = the velocity at which the ball leaves the paddle face with minimal additional force. What you feel on volleys, counters, and blocks at the NVZ — shots where you have no time for a backswing.
The Gamma Obsidian 16 has:
- Power: Strong — baseline drives, serves, and ground strokes are confident and well-paced
- Pop: Limited — compact volleys and counter-attacks at the kitchen line lack the energy return to put balls away cleanly
This is the defining characteristic of any 16mm control paddle. The thicker core absorbs energy on contact (which is great for dinks and resets) but that same absorption reduces how much energy returns to the ball on short, quick exchanges.
If you play a soft, patient game — rallying from the baseline, working points through methodical dinks, and using drops to get to the kitchen — the Obsidian 16's power profile suits you perfectly. If you play a more explosive style with NVZ speedups and aggressive counters, the 13mm version gives you the pop you need at the cost of some soft-game softness.

Kitchen Line Performance
Drops, dinks, and resets were seamless. The Sensa Core honeycomb delivers what Gamma describes as "what you give is what you get" feedback — swing hard, get a hard shot; swing soft, get a soft shot. This predictability is rare in thermoformed paddles, which often add unexpected pop to mishits. The Obsidian 16 keeps mishits more controlled than most.
Transitioning from baseline defense to the kitchen was natural. The soft core makes third-shot drops effortless — you can attack the angle knowing the paddle won't add unwanted pop. Getting to the kitchen is half the game, and this paddle makes that transition reliable.
The raised sweet spot (shifted higher due to the tapered profile) took brief adjustment. Once calibrated, it produced a comfortable, consistent hitting area across the upper two-thirds of the face.
Gamma Obsidian 16 vs. 13mm: Which Should You Choose?
| Factor | Obsidian 16 (16mm) | Obsidian 13 (13mm) |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen control / resets | Excellent — energy absorption is high | Good — slightly less absorption |
| NVZ pop / speedups | Limited — too soft for aggressive NVZ | Better — faster energy return |
| Dink consistency | Best-in-class for the price | Good but with more pop variance |
| Best player profile | Beginner–intermediate, soft-game focused | Intermediate–advanced, wants both control AND pop |
| Spin | 1,800–1,900 RPM | {{RESEARCH NEEDED: Gamma Obsidian 13mm spin data}} |

Warranty and Durability
The Gamma Obsidian line uses a thermoformed construction with the Sensa Core honeycomb. Thermoformed paddles are generally durable; the edge guard and face bond hold up well under regular play conditions. {{VERIFY: Gamma's current warranty terms for Obsidian 16 — check gammasports.com}}
Not the Right Paddle For You?
The Gamma Obsidian 16 is not the right choice if:
- You're an advanced 4.5+ player. The paddle is too soft for the pop requirements of high-level play. Most advanced players would use this in warm-ups at best.
- You need aggressive NVZ play. Limited pop on compact volleys makes it difficult to put away balls that require hand-speed and punch volleys.
- You want the grittiest possible raw carbon surface. The tighter weave means a smoother surface feel compared to more aggressively textured paddles.
- You need a longer handle. At 5.75" it's actually long for this category — but players accustomed to longer-handled elongated paddles (5.75"+) should be comfortable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Gamma Obsidian 16 good for beginners?
Yes. Light stock weight (7.51 oz in testing), large sweet spot, forgiving soft-game, and predictable Sensa Core feedback make it well-suited to beginners and intermediates. Advanced 4.5+ players will find it too soft.
What is the spin rate of the Gamma Obsidian 16?
1,800–1,900 RPM in testing — high spin category. The tighter raw carbon weave feels smoother than some competitors but produces competitive spin through friction mechanics at contact.
What's the difference between Gamma Obsidian 16 and 13mm?
16mm: best kitchen control, softer, better dinks/resets. 13mm: more pop on compact volleys, better for aggressive NVZ play. Your playing style determines which is better.
Is the Gamma Obsidian 16 thermoformed?
Yes — confirmed by Gamma. Notably one of the softest thermoformed paddles available, behaving more like a hand-laid paddle in actual feel.

Great review
Such a sweet looking paddle. Love the black with the white contrast. It looks like a great option. I have always played with a power paddle and have been considering trying a softer paddle to see how I like it. @dr.jcardozadpt
Very in depth review.
@itsmeangela3
Love raw carbon paddles! Love that this is 16mm thick as well. Great to know this is a good transition paddle from defense to offense. Thank you! Insta handle is lala_stroh.
I need a paddle to help my drops and with dinking. Looks like a good fit. philpb012
I love the in depth review of this paddle. The spin rate and touch sounds like it makes this paddle great for control and placement. I hope I can get my hands on one. @Thirdshotpodcast_unclegreg
Off the bat this seems like my kind of paddle! Sounds like finesse and control come to play with this one which I love. The design looks sick, and I like the “consistent” description attached to this paddle. @gabriel_odisho
Interesting that paddles are getting more hybrid shaped. I love the way the paddle looks, nice and clean. The only gripe I have with the review would be to go more in depth on swing weight. This is one of my personal factors in picking a paddle. @oreotime
Sounds like something I need to try out. Battling some elbow issues , the lightweight has me very intrigued!
Learned something new today, power vs pop. I’ve never seen a shape like this one. Especially with the sweet spot so close to the edge. Would be an interesting paddle to play with. I’ve been working hard at using the center but this would allow me to fallback to my original set spot. Nice review. See you on the courts! @spectergadget
Did you list the “swing weight” and the “twist weight” for the 16mm Obsidian?
Been demo’ing the 16mm and have really enjoyed it. Although it’s geared towards a control paddle it certainly doesn’t lack in power, in particularly if you can provide your own. I’m just learning how to spin and this paddle made me look like I’ve been doing it for a while. With this said, I’d still like to try out the 13mm before I pull the trigger. If I can’t find a 13, I might just go for the 16. It certainly has a bigger sweet spot then my Six Zero Black Infinity and that was a big plus.
