Head History

The Head Tennis Company was started in 1950 by Howard Head, an engineer and former skier. He designed a successful metal ski and decided to apply his knowledge of engineering and aerodynamics to improving the game of tennis. His first innovation was the “Head Standard“, a racket with a larger head than conventional rackets that made it easier to hit the ball in the sweet spot. This racket helped him win several amateur tournaments. In 1968, he introduced the “Prince“, a racket with an oval–shaped head that gave players more control over their shots.

The Prince quickly became one of the most popular rackets on the professional tour, helping players such as Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert, and Björn Borg win multiple Grand Slam titles. Head‘s biggest contribution to tennis came in 1976 when he introduced the first titanium tennis racket, called the “Head Ti Invention“. This racket was 20% lighter than traditional wooden rackets but just as strong, giving players more power and speed without sacrificing control. The Ti Invention helped launch a new era of power tennis that continues to this day. Nowadays, Head is one of the leading manufacturers of tennis equipment and its products are used by many top professional players including Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and Milos Raonic.
